Kitchen Remodel in Querétaro for Expats: How to Work with a Local Cabinet Maker

Moving to Querétaro often comes with a house that is almost right: good location, good light, and a kitchen that doesn't fit the way you cook. If you're coming from the U.S. or Canada, you probably want a kitchen that feels like home, but you may not be sure how custom cabinetry works in Mexico. Here's what to expect when you work with a local cabinet maker like Cocinas Balaya.

Custom-made, not off the shelf

Instead of picking boxed cabinets from a store, with a local cabinet maker your kitchen is designed and built to fit your actual walls. We've been building in our own shop in Querétaro since 2018, so every cabinet, closet and door is made to your measurements. That matters in homes where walls aren't perfectly square, or where you want the cabinets to reach the ceiling instead of leaving a dusty gap on top.

How the process works

1. Free measurement. We visit your home, take measurements and note where water, gas and power are located.
2. Free 3D design. You see the layout, finishes and storage before anything is built, and you can adjust it.
3. Materials and hardware. You choose finishes, countertops and hardware such as soft-close drawers, pull-outs and corner solutions.
4. Fabrication in our shop. Production and scheduling are planned around each project.
5. Installation. Cabinets are installed and doors and drawers are adjusted on site.

Tips for a smoother kitchen remodel in Mexico

• Measure your appliances first. U.S.-style refrigerators and ranges can be larger than local models. Tell us the exact models before the design is final.
• Ask about the corner. A good corner solution turns dead space into real storage.
• Think about the whole house. We also build closets, walk-in closets, doors and bathroom vanities, so the woodwork can match from room to room.
• Visit the showroom. Seeing finishes in person is easier than choosing from a photo. Our showroom is at Av. Peñuelas 5, San Pedrito Peñuelas, by appointment.

Can you manage it from abroad?

A lot of the conversation can happen remotely. Once we've measured, you can review the 3D design over WhatsApp, ask questions and approve changes from wherever you are. It helps to have someone in Querétaro who can open the house for the measurement and installation, or to plan those dates around a visit.
